A new voice is turning heads and ears alike in Southern California’s flooded music scene. Margarita Mantis, barely out of her teens, is carving out a niche that’s as unique as her name. This rock musician, lyricist, producer, binaural sound mixer, poet, and composer is not just making music – she’s crafting an entire genre she calls “Binaural Rock.”

Mantis’s journey kicked off in 2021 when she was just sweet sixteen. Like many aspiring artists, she started by posting acoustic demos on YouTube. But unlike most, her distinctive style quickly caught on, snowballing into a dedicated online following.

“I began taking music seriously in 2021, when I was 16 years old,” Mantis recalls. “I started uploading my music to YouTube and steadily grew a following since then.”

Her big break came in August 2022 when she stepped into a recording studio for the first time. The result? Her debut single, “I Can Hear the Flowers Laugh,” hit the digital shelves in October that year. It was a watershed moment for the young artist, marking her transition from bedroom musician to professional recording artist.

But Mantis didn’t rest on her laurels. She followed up with three more singles and a five-track EP titled “Ocean of Life.” Her work ethic is evident, and it’s paid off in spades with her latest release, “Jejune” – a whopping 15-track album that serves as the cornerstone of her pioneering genre.

So, what exactly is Binaural Rock? Margarita Mantis explains it as a fusion of melodic rock and punk, spiced up with cutting-edge audio technology. “Spatial audio, otherwise known as binaural panning and surround sound, is an audio mixing technique that creates a 3D sound sensation,” she elaborates. “It’s an illusion that the instruments are moving around you in a 3D-like mode.”

Mantis’s approach to this technique is what she calls the “hybrid method.” Some elements remain in traditional stereo, while others dance around the listener’s head. The result? A sound that’s as unpredictable as it is immersive.

But Binaural Rock isn’t just about fancy audio tricks. Mantis’s lyrics pack a punch too. Her songs often tackle weighty topics, from personal struggles to societal issues. Take “Jejune,” for instance. The album title might sound light, but its contents are anything but.

“The word ‘Jejune’ can be used to describe something superficial, simplistic, or boring,” Mantis points out. “Much of the album revolves around assessing the root of our life’s unfulfillment, and our mankind’s seemingly dull yet convoluted, double-crossing nature.”

It’s heavy stuff for someone so young, but Mantis approaches it with a maturity beyond her years. She sees her music as more than just entertainment – it’s a platform for change.

“I hope my listeners become more informed or encouraged by my music,” she says. “It is my civil duty to uplift, educate and aid my community, and henceforth the world, in being better, stronger, and more mindful through my songs.”

When asked about her influences, Mantis takes an unconventional stance. She believes that true art should come from within, not from imitating others. “I don’t believe that I have any particular musical influences,” she states, “since I believe that nobody should influence your art but yourself and your own experience.”

That’s not to say she lives in a bubble. Mantis draws inspiration from a wide range of artists and writers. Importantly, she emphasizes, “I see the beauty in all music genres.” This open-mindedness is reflected in her music, which often incorporates elements from folk and electronic dance music alongside her rock foundation.

Mantis’s talents extend beyond the recording studio. She’s a one-woman production team, editing all her own video content, including music videos. “Currently, I’m planning to bestow some of my time towards more video projects,” she shares, hinting at future visual treats for her fans.

But music remains her primary focus. Margarita Mantis is constantly working on new material and even plans to revisit some of her older tracks. “I’m going to keep working on pushing out new music, and revisiting some of my older songs by rerecording and remixing them in the Binaural Rock style!” she exclaims.

For fans eager for new content, Mantis has a tantalizing tidbit: “Keep a look out for new singles! Since they are coming very soon!”
