Louisiana has a way of producing rappers who sound like nowhere else. The state gave us Lil Wayne’s endless wordplay and Kevin Gates’ gut-punch honesty, and it keeps exporting talent that reshapes the genre. So when a new artist steps out of Gonzales saying he wants to add to that history rather than borrow from it, the claim carries weight. That’s the position D$avage finds himself in right now.
He’s tied to the Breadwinner Alumni family, but he’s clear that association isn’t the whole story. “My goal is to establish my own identity and prove what I bring to the table,” he says. It’s a distinction that matters. Plenty of artists ride a crew’s momentum and never develop past it. D$avage talks about the BWA legacy as something to carry forward while building a lane of his own.
His background isn’t the typical one. He grew up around music and played instruments as a kid, spending time as a percussionist before he ever thought about rapping. That rhythmic foundation shows up in how he approaches flow, which he traces back to hometown influences like Gates and Wayne. He describes his sound as raw Southern street rap built on real-life storytelling, hard production, and an aggressive delivery. Some records are made to turn you up. Others pull back for a closer look at where his head is at.
The through line is experience. He raps about hustling, survival, money, pain, and loyalty, and he wants that to land as lived rather than performed. “If you’re a fan of authentic Southern hip-hop and artists who make you feel like they’ve actually lived what they’re rapping about, you’ll understand my music,” he says.
His latest single, “Chosen One,” dropped July 31st. At 1:30, it’s a quick introduction, but that’s the point. It’s a doorway into his other tracks, including “2am on Highland,” “Pain,” and “So Icy.” Next up is his debut mixtape, “007 The Mixtape,” coming soon.
Ask him about a dream collaboration and he doesn’t reach for a superstar he’s never met. He names NBA YoungBoy, a fellow Louisiana native from the same area, and wonders aloud whether YoungBoy would even remember him from back in the day. Where he comes from is the whole point of the answer.
